About German Cultural Society of St. Louis

The German Cultural Society has its origin in the St. Louis Chapter of the American Aid Society, which was founded in 1945 to help the German refugees of Eastern Europe who fled to German and Austria. When immigration to the United Sates became a possibility, many of these refugees who came to St. Louis joined the Society, as did many other immigrants from Germany & Austria.

When the need for help abated in post-war Germany, the members of the Society set the preservation of their cultural heritage as the primary goal. To more accurately reflect this purpose, the organization changed its name in 1969 to the "German Cultural Society".

The German Cultural Society is a not-for- profit, non political organization, whose purpose is to foster educational and benevolent activities, to preserve and advance the German culture, customs, and language, to cultivate German music, songs, and dances in traditional costumes. All of this makes up the German folklore, tradition, and fellowship.

Anyone interested in promoting and supporting the purposes of this Society is welcome to membership. Although the official language of the Society is German, meetings and discussions today are held in English. General meetings are held on select Sundays throughout the year.

The German Cultural Society is one of the largest and one of the most successful of the German societies in the St. Louis area, with a multi-purpose building and hall on Jefferson Ave and the Donau Park facility in Jefferson County for outdoor events.
